The Motel That Charged Extra for Hope

Bad economics, worse signage, excellent parking.

Too late. You are already reading Broken Zine.

The Vacancy Star Motel had three rates posted on the office window: ROOM, ROOM WITH TOWELS, and ROOM WITH REASONABLE EXPECTATIONS.

I asked the clerk what the last one included.

“Hope,” he said. “Twelve dollars extra.”

The base room came with a bed, a lamp that had seen things, and a painting of a sailboat trying to leave. Wi-Fi was complimentary in the sense that nobody had successfully charged for it.

At 10:14 p.m. I called the desk because the ice machine was making a noise like someone filing a grievance inside a metal cabinet.

“That’s normal,” the clerk said.

“Is it?”

“No. But it’s included.”

Breakfast cost nine dollars unless you agreed not to call it breakfast. Parking was free, optimism was metered, and checkout came with a small surcharge for believing you had learned anything.

I paid the twelve dollars for hope.

It was nonrefundable.
