The Exposure Economy Has Office Hours

A short nonfiction piece about exposure, creative labor, and the strange bookkeeping of literary prestige.

WHY IS THIS IN THE FILE?

Nobody took responsibility quickly enough.

Every creative field has a polite sentence that means: we would like the work, but not enough to pay for it.

In writing, the sentence is often good exposure. Exposure is a strange currency. It cannot be deposited, it does not compound, and the electric company has so far refused to accept it.

The insult is not that every small magazine or reading series lacks money. Many genuinely do. The insult is pretending that scarcity becomes compensation when you rename it.

A better arrangement is less glamorous and more honest: say what you can pay. Say what you cannot. Do not make the writer perform gratitude for the privilege of subsidizing your budget.

Artists understand poverty. What exhausts them is the paperwork required to call it opportunity.
