The Apartment That Kept One Room Warm

Every winter the heat failed everywhere except the room nobody used.

Too late. You are already reading Broken Zine.

Every winter, the apartment lost heat.

The kitchen went cold first. Then the bedroom. Then the bathroom mirror stopped fogging because there was no warmth left to hold.

Only the small back room stayed warm.

Nobody used it.

The landlord called it “storage.” The previous tenant had called it “the sewing room.” The current tenants called it “that room.”

When the radiators failed, they moved chairs inside and sat there in coats.

The room smelled faintly of cedar and dust.

On the coldest night of January, one of them noticed a handprint on the inside of the window.

Not frost.

A handprint.

Warm.

They did not mention it to the landlord.

Some maintenance requests are better left unresolved.
