The Academic Job Ad as Found Poem

A close reading of the modern hiring notice, where one person is expected to be an entire department with cheerful energy.

WHY IS THIS IN THE FILE?

Nobody took responsibility quickly enough.

The contemporary academic job ad is one of the great accidental literary forms.

It begins in realism:

The Department of English invites applications for a full-time position.

Then the hallucination starts.

The successful candidate will teach composition, literature, professional writing, digital humanities, first-year seminars, graduate methods, and “other courses as needed.” They will advise students, coordinate assessment, support recruitment, participate in governance, develop community partnerships, contribute to accreditation, demonstrate excellence in scholarship, and maintain an active record of service.

Sometimes the ad adds: We especially welcome candidates who can expand our offerings in areas not currently represented.

This sentence means: please become the missing half of the department.

The job may carry a nine-month salary while expecting twelve months of institutional concern.

It may be “teaching-focused” but require publications.

It may be “research-active” but assign four courses a semester.

It may describe the institution as collaborative six times, which is the organizational equivalent of a restaurant placing “FRESH” on every window.

The strangest phrase is often the successful candidate. It appears before any candidate exists, a small prophecy written by Human Resources.

By the final paragraph, the ad has stopped describing a job and started describing a species not yet observed in nature.

The creature teaches brilliantly, publishes steadily, serves enthusiastically, recruits effectively, assesses continuously, attends willingly, mentors generously, travels cheaply, relocates happily, and answers email after dinner.

Minimum qualification: doctorate.

Preferred qualification: immortality.
