Out of Order

The most honest sign in public life may be taped to a machine.

WHY IS THIS IN THE FILE?

Nobody took responsibility quickly enough.

There is something admirable about an OUT OF ORDER sign.

It does not say the machine is experiencing temporary service optimization.

It does not say your experience matters to us.

It does not invite you to scan a QR code, create an account, agree to revised terms, and chat with an assistant named Kyle who is not a person.

It says: this thing does not work.

Usually the sign is handwritten.

Someone found printer paper, a marker, and the remaining institutional courage to describe reality.

The sign may be taped to an elevator, vending machine, toilet, copier, ticket kiosk, ice maker, or door that still looks perfectly capable of being a door.

Its power comes from the gap between appearance and function. Here is the object. It has buttons. It has lights. It has a slot designed specifically for your money. Nevertheless: no.

We could use more OUT OF ORDER signs in adult life.

Place one on a meeting whose decision was made before anyone arrived.

Place one on a website that requires six clicks to reveal a phone number.

Place one on the phrase “we value your feedback” when nobody has budgeted for changing anything.

Place one on your own forehead some Tuesday afternoon.

The sign is not optimistic, but it is useful.

It gives you information early enough to walk away.

That is more than many functioning systems manage.
